The Other Irish

For the McClintock/Pyne branches of the family:  The McClintocks and Pynes came from Ireland, but how Irish are they now?  For the benefit of those who are first cousins you only share half this lineage, so pick your half.  Stan (and his brother and sister) is 1/2 Italian, 1/8 Irish, and the other 3/8 "old American" (which means the families have been here a while, and are probably predominantly of English descent.  Betty (and sibs) is 3/4 Irish and 1/4 "old American". You first cousins will have to add one of these (your side of the family) to the mix from your other parent and divide by 2 to get your own mix.  Their children are then 7/16 Irish, 1/4 Italian, and 5/16 "old American".

  1. As I start to look at DNA tests, where origins are reported as percentages, a conversion is useful. Known ancestry predicts the McClintock/Pyne kids are 44% Irish, 25% Italian, and 31% "old American" (this last probably mostly English).

  2. As I further look at DNA tests, AncestryDNA has been indicating a significant portion of McClintock DNA from the Iberian penninsula. While searching for an Italian ancestor named Silva, I had discovered that this is predominantly a Portuguese name. The amount of DNA attributed to the Iberian penninsula was about 5%, which is consistent with Mary Silva's father being full-blooded Portuguese, even though he is thought to have been born in Italy. This changes my estimate for Stan and sibs to 3/8 Italian, 1/8 Portuguese, 1/8 Irish and 3/8 "old American". The kids then are 7/16 (44%) Irish, 3/16 (19%) Italian, 1/16 (6%) Portuguese and 5/16 (31%) "old American".
