We are likely related to these Covingtons via Francis Covington, who we believe to be Richard Covington's father. My mother and I have done quite a lot of work on the Covingtons of early East Tennessee, almost all of whom we believe are related. A great deal of the information can be found on my mom's family tree on Ancestry (see pam_covington53), but a short summary of why we believe Francis was Richard's father:

Facts:

* Richard married a Rebecca Cain in 23 Jul 1808 in Blount TN.
* Richard's son John was married in Roane in 1829
* John is on the same census page with a Jacob Cain in 1830
* This Jacob Cain is the same married 4 Mar 1811 in Knox TN

* Anna Covington married a Peter Cain in 21 Nov 1807 in Greenville SC.
* Peter and Anna lived in Roane in 1830
* Anna Covington had a son Francis in 1809 and Jacob in 1813

* Francis Covington has records in Greenville SC up to 1806, Knox in 1830
* In 1798, Francis is on a plat in Greenville with a Jacob Cain

Inferences:

The coincidence of three Jacob Cains is the main thing that jumps out at you: Francis Covington lived beside the eldest Jacob Cain/Keen in Greenville SC, Peter Cain (of an age to be the elder Jacob's son) had a son Jacob Cain, and another Jacob Cain/Kean (slightly older than Peter Cain) was found both in Knox and as a near neighbor of Rebecca Cain/Richard Covington's son John.

It seems fairly clear that there was (a progenitor) Jacob Cain in Greenville, son Peter married Anna Covington in Greenville (1807), then daughter Rebecca married Richard Covington in Blount (1808). Another son Jacob married in Knox in 1811, then was found next to Richard's son John in 1830. Overall, this is consistent with both Cain and Covington families moving from Greenville to Knox/Blount in 1808.

The connection of Francis to our ancestor John Covington is easier:

* Francis in 1830 is next to Sally Lonas, surely the same as Sally Covington who married George Lonas in 1813.
* The Lonas family were Mennonites from Shenandoah, closely connected to the Stickley family by marriage.
* Two Stickleys married two Covingtons in 1813 and 1815. Our ancestor John's marriage was only 12 days after Sally Covington's marriage to George Lonas.
* John Covington's son Daniel ends up living in Knox in 1840, after the presumed decease of Francis, possibly on land inherited from Francis, though we have not proven that yet.

These (and their descendants) are virtually all the Covingtons recorded in the Knox area before 1870, so it makes sense that they are related. All the above-named Covingtons fit on Francis' census from 1800 Greenville. Many of these Covingtons occasionally used the form Coventon.

The above evidence is by no means definitive, but I think it is convincing. Hope this information is useful!

I should separately note that we have located the 1830 census for Richard: he is in Morgan County, fourth entry on sheet 92 of the East Tennessee census (image 9 in the Ancestry census of Morgan). His last name is transcribed as "Woomton", but the image has "Coventon" (all but the 3rd letter pretty clear). Furthermore, his neighbor William Maples is also likely of the Maples family of Sevier County, TN.

Again, thank you for the information. It really gave us somewhere to start when we were looking at Richard Covington.A Recovering Indo-Europeanisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00935947668392885665noreply@blogger.com
